Course overview  

This unit will provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to carry out work based risk control processes. It covers the identification of hazards, the assessment of risk, the identification of unacceptable risk and the preparation and completion of a course of action as required by a plumbing contractor.

Course outcome

On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Analyse a worksite and existing safety system information to identify and classify unresolved hazards and their likely impact.
  • Apply the three steps of identifying work based hazards, assessing the risk and determining unacceptable risk situations.
  • Identify, analyse and develop a plan of action to control risk.
  • Complete documentation associated with work based risk control and ensure proper distribution, storage and review
  • Apply planning to ensure identified controls are implemented and reviewed in a timely manner.

Course recognition

Participants successfully completing this course will receive a Statement of Attainment for CPCPCM4001A Carry out work based risk control processes.

Participants wishing to engage in further formal studies will receive credit for this unit where it forms part of any other accredited course or training package qualification.

This unit is required by the Plumbing Industry Commission for registered plumbers who wish to seek their license in any stream.

Target participants

  • Registered and/or licensed plumbers who have or may have responsibility for the safety of workers, contractors and/or visitors to the worksite/s under their control. The development of knowledge and skills relating to work based risk control processes is a major contributor to the ability to undertake this role.
  • Newly qualified plumbers or completing apprentices wishing to develop a better understanding of work based hazard identification and risk control.

Participant entry requirements / prerequisites

There are no pre requisites for this unit of competency.

Participants require language, literacy and numeracy skills of a sufficient level to enable them to complete activities applicable to the following levels of the Australian Core Skills Framework:

  • Learning          Level 4
  • Reading           Level 4
  • Writing             Level 3
  • Oral com.        Level 3
  • Numeracy       Level 3

Duration

24 hours over eight weeks (evening delivery).

Delivery arrangements

The delivery of this course has been developed to offer greater flexibility to participants and reduce the amount of classroom based training. Course delivery will use a combination of face to face classroom training, flexible learning materials and self directed home based study.

Course delivery involves:

  • 12 hours of trainer led learning and assessment, one (1) evening per fortnight (3hrs) over eight (8) weeks
  • plus 12 hrs self directed learning prior to or during course attendance.

Assessment arrangements

Unit assessment requires participants to:

  • actively participate in class discussions
  • complete a theory assessment
  • complete a written project on researching OHS policies and procedures
  • conduct a workplace risk inspection
  • carry out a work based risk assessment.
